Jason Holton died due to organ failure. He regretted that people would remember him as the UK’s “heaviest man”.
Jason Holton, who was known to be one of Britain’s “heaviest men”, died a week before turning 34. Holton died due to organ failure, UK-based newspaper The Independent said in a report, citing his family.
He weighed an estimated 317kg at the time of his death. Doctors in Surrey said they were unable to prevent his organs from failing. Six firefighters carried Holton to the Royal Surrey County Hospital following an ambulance ride.
Leisa, Holton’s mother, told UK-based news media outlets that doctors did say that her son would pass away “within a week”. Holton’s kidneys were the first organs to stop working, she further added.
“Jason soon started to go downhill. He’s probably had about eight lives and I thought the doctors would be able to save him again, but sadly it wasn’t possible,” Leisa was quoted as saying by The Sun.
The coroner’s report said that Holton died from organ failure and obesity.
Holton spent his last days in a specially adapted council bungalow, the newspaper said. It was custom-built with reinforced furniture for his comfort. Towards the end of his life, he became immobile, bedridden and suffered from breathing difficulties.
He began overeating as a teen while grieving his father’s death and went on to consume 10,000 calories a day. The report said that he began his day by eating doner kebabs for breakfast.
“I believe time’s over for me in general. I’m coming up 34 now. I know I’ve got to try something,” Jason Holton said during an interview with TalkTV in 2023.
He collapsed in 2020 and was airlifted by crane from a third-floor flat by a team of more than 30 firefighters.
“That was the most devastating time of my life,” he said. Holton suffered a series of mini-strokes and a suspected blood clot two years later. The record for being Britain’s heaviest man was held by Carl Thompson in 2015 before Holton. Thompson weighed 412kg.
