Genetic and neurobiological factors shape the development of eating disorders much earlier than previously thought, with evidence emerging in children as young as 9 years old, Yale-led research reveals. The findings, researchers say, highlight the need for early screening and intervention. The results were published July 27 in Nature Mental Health. Eating disorders, such as bulimia, anorexia, and binge-eating, are serious mental health problems that can severely affect the quality of life of children and their families. Eating disorders are on the rise and between the years 2000 and 2018 the prevalence doubled.
