Ask For Help From Support 

If you are feeling overwhelmed, advocate for yourself and seek support in the moment. If you are not with someone you feel supported by or comfortable sharing your struggle with, step away to go to the bathroom or somewhere private and give a loved one or trusted friend one a call. You can also practice deep breathing or refer to an affirmation or mantra that resonates with you, and reminds you of your reason for recovery.

Plan Ahead of Time With Your Treatment Team and Support System

Many summer events come with lots of different fun and delicious food options, which can often feel nerve-wracking to those in recovery from an eating disorder. It can be overwhelming to decide what to eat, how much to eat, and when to eat. That is why planning ahead of time with your therapist and dietitian is important. They can help you develop a nutrition plan, help you navigate triggering situations, and cope ahead of time for emotional stress.

Dress Comfortably

Summer foods and get-togethers are stressful enough without the added worry about feeling uncomfortable in your skin. To reduce your body image distress, wear something that you physically feel comfortable in so you can be present – look for soft fabrics and comfortable styles. Unfortunately, the anxiety and fears around food and your body will not magically go away, but you can control how intense the distress feels by dressing for comfort.
