Once again, CEED faculty and staff are excited to invite promising junior researchers to spend the summer engaged in mentored research. Since 2011 (only missing 2019), we have hosted a range of trainees from disciplines including medicine, psychology, nutrition, behavioral health, counseling, social work, and even journalism to spend June and July with us advancing their skills an gaining hands-on experience conducting impactful research. Each trainee is matched with at minimum two mentors to ensure a range of experiences. Every weekday from 11am-12pm fellows participate in the Summer Fellowship Didactic Program where they are exposed to topics that range from functional genomics to advocacy. Mentors and didactic instructors are from several departments in UNC, our sister program the Centre for Eating Disorders Innovation at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, and our global collaborators in Denmark, New Zealand, Mexico, and Wales.

Options for shadowing clinicians exist on our inpatient unit, outpatient eating disorders service, and in pediatric gastroenterology. Fellows are able to attend groups, rounds, treatment sessions, and team meetings where our multidisciplinary team works together to personalize treatment plans for our patients and families.

Chapel Hill and the surrounding area are also great places to live for a summer. It can get a little hot, but there are plenty of trees to keep you cool and an ocean not too far away! And then there’s the annual skating party!

In case you were wondering what types of science our fellows are engaged in, the reference list below highlights some publications that have emerged from their work. Many continue to work with our team long after the summer is over! In addition, fellows play a central role in helping us run ongoing studies by developing content for participant recruitment, co-leading in focus groups with our lived experience experts, and learning the nuts and bolts of conducting large international research studies. All of this while learning side-by-side with folks who will be your peers and collaborators throughout your career!
