In these retro reviews, I’ve been looking back in time at the top 3 blog posts on my site of all time.

And we have finally made it blog post #1, one on the topic of unrealistic beauty standards… It is titled, “Does this uterus make me look fat?”

Pretty catchy title, huh? It’s essentially a takedown of the pressures to achieve a flat belly, pointing out the ridiculousness of the assignment given all the vital organs that occupy space in there.

But do you want to know something kind of laughable? The majority of the blog wasn’t written by me. A client had written this on her own blog and as we were talking about it in the context of the body image work we were doing together, I asked her if I could share it. So, my most popular blog was mostly not written by me, which may seem to suggest that I should have my clients write my blog posts for me. Ha!

unrealistic beauty standards are issues

I think it’s a little unfair to ask if I would write the same post today, since they aren’t my words. But what I can say is that I stay true to pushing back against external pressures which convince us to erase our humanity – whether it’s our femininity, our age, our size, etc. Erasure and self-harm in the name of conformity to unrealistic beauty standards are issues I’m committed to fighting.

This is a message that is recognized every year during Weight Stigma Awareness Week.

If you ever need any resources for this, you can check out their website to take advantage of the free resources. There are too many to name here.

Clinicians, these resources will change your practice. And if you are a client struggling with body image issues, these resources have the power to change your life.

In case you missed it, I also have a free resource which specifically addresses weight stigma in dietetics practice that may be of particular interest to you nutrition providers.

Before I wrap up, I want to say that I HEARD YOU!! I cannot believe the response I got about my last article.

You want more content related to deep scientific dives, particularly on the topic of sugar and ultra processed food addiction. I promise to deliver but likely not until November because I have some special stuff cooked up for the month of October. Hint, hint: It’s that special time that I celebrate every year. Make sure you are on my email list. You’ll be among the first to hear about it!
