For the first time in state history, the Colorado legislature last week passed measures to specifically address the issue of eating disorders. If signed into law by the governor, Senate Bill 14 will create a statewide program to educate and maintain a resource bank on disordered eating research, prevention, intervention and treatments. Senate Bill 176 will prohibit insurance providers from denying coverage of eating disorder treatment due to weight standards, and restrict the sale of diet pills to minors. In Colorado and nationwide, around one in 10 people will be diagnosed with an eating disorder in their lifetime, most commonly anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder. Welcome to State of Mind, a section from Slate and Arizona State University dedicated to exploring mental health. Follow us on Twitter. Makailah Dowell grew up facing food scarcity and homelessness in small-town Idaho. Her biological parents were never in the picture, so she was raised by her grandmother, who struggled to make ends meet on a housekeeper’s salary. For the most part, they survived on food stamps and discounted, lower-quality groceries—except for the rare days when her grandmother would get a haul of free food from the hotel where she worked. “That’s when the binge eating came out,” Dowell remembers. To trace the knowledge about food, chemical, and disease interactions, we have shown the creation of a KG centered around the impact of different foods and chemicals on CVDs, and the other targeting the composition of the selected food item “milk”, as well as its beneficial and detrimental effects on different NCDs. For this purpose, three NLP pipelines, called FooDis, FoodChem, and ChemDis, were combined to extract “food-disease”, “food-chemical”, and “chemical-disease” relations from textual data. Semantically, we distinguish two relations between food-disease and chemical-disease entity pairs, which are “treat” and “cause”. In the case of food-chemical entity pairs, we extracted…
Introduction The multidimensional nature of distress tolerance is emphasized in the current literature. Thus, formulating a single overarching theory of distress tolerance is challenging. For example, Simons and Gaher (1) conceptualize distress tolerance as an individual’s ability to tolerate aversive states. In their view, distress tolerance reflects the ability to tolerate and accept negative emotions, emotion regulation strategies, and the degree to which attention is absorbed by negative emotions and its interference with functioning. In previous studies, distress tolerance is believed to reflect two components: (1) the perceived competence to withstand an aversive state (e.g., negative emotions, physical discomfort) and…
Do you spend a lot of mental energy thinking about exercise? Do you think about when and how you are going to fit exercising in? Do you have excessive worry or guilt if you don’t exercise? If any of those sound familiar to you, they could be signs that your exercise routine has become problematic. Generally speaking, exercise is a good thing for you. Exercise is not only fun, but it can improve physical and mental health and bolster self-esteem. Exercise can also be social. Participating in sports, whether recreationally or competitively, has numerous benefits like introducing you to other…

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Advocates in Kentucky are working to raise awareness about signs, treatment options and resources available for people battling eating disorders.Dr. Andrea Krause with Norton Children’s Hospital said she sees some of the “sickest of the sick” when it comes to children and teenage patients battling eating disorders who end up hospitalized.”A lot of work needs to be done to know that eating disorders are very prevalent — more prevalent than anyone realizes — because it’s not something that people generally talk about,” Krause said. “Every case is different, and I’ve definitely seen kids with very restrictive eating…
