Today on YouTube, crisis resource panels are currently available at the top of search results related to eating disorders in the US, UK, India, Canada, Japan, Korea, Mexico, France and Germany. Crisis resource panels provide resources and information from global mental health support organizations, such as NEDA in the U.S. or the Vandrevala Foundation in India. Now, in addition to the new policies and age restrictions, we’re expanding crisis resource panels to also appear on Watch pages in these countries. ARFID is different from eating disorders that cause people to restrict calories due to a fear of gaining weight or because they have a distorted body image. Instead, people with the eating disorder might have sensory issues or they might have experienced a traumatic event that leads to an avoidance or restriction of food. “I had a gradual growth in my fears,” Diana told BuzzFeed News. “First it started out as a fear of choking on food. Once that fear did not come to fruition, it escalated to a fear of anaphylaxis [an allergic reaction]. This was particular to foods I…
New York CNN — YouTube on Tuesday announced a series of changes to how it deals with content related to eating disorders. The platform has long removed content that glorifies or promotes eating disorders, and YouTube’s Community Guidelines will now also prohibit content that features behaviors such as purging after eating or extreme calorie counting that at-risk users could be inspired to imitate. For videos that feature such “imitable behaviors” in the context of recovery, YouTube will allow the content to remain on the site but restrict it to users who are logged into the site and are over the…
Families can play a crucial role in supporting recovery. While eating disorders are by no means a direct reflection of parents’ or siblings’ approach to food, it is necessary to be self-aware about food or movement. Whether you change rules around eating at the dinner table, how you comment on your own food intake or exercise choices, or even rethink comments about appearance in general, listening to your child and their support team can be incredibly helpful. By: Elizabeth Foot Eating disorder recovery takes a village. And while family support is not always available, if it is, family support strengthens…
Choosing to send your child to residential treatment for their eating disorder is a big decision. I have yet to meet a parent who doesn’t feel nervous and unsure about how to decide how to handle this. Following are some of the most common questions and my answers to help you make the best decision you possibly can. While residential treatment is not a magic bullet to full recovery, it can be an initial stepping stone that can help your child and your whole family get on the road to recovery. What can I expect in residential eating disorder treatment?…
By Kierstin Graham, Guest Contributor“Don’t pass out. Don’t pass out. Don’t pass out.” These were the words I repeated to myself before teaching yoga classes. Initially, having an eating disorder kept me away from practicing yoga, and then once I did start, the yoga studios I went to focused on fitness and diets, which fed into my obsessive eating disorder behaviors and thoughts. I have some fear around writing this. Since yoga practice is an exploration of self-knowledge, I think it’s easy for studios to write these words off as just my experience. Though it may be my experience, I…
You may believe you can manage your recovery and healing from your eating disorder alone, but getting support is essential. It is human nature to both need and seek support, comfort, and accompaniment from loved ones, peers, and other beings. Finding a stable support system can be challenging. However, it is worth pursuing because it is crucial for a successful recovery. By: Tori Barkosky Below are five tips for building your support system and setting boundaries to prevent you from settling for care that is less than what you deserve. Getting parent support when kids have eating disorders can make all the difference in treatment and recovery. Parents are not the cause of eating disorders, and yet the way they approach treatment and recovery can make all the difference in whether their child accepts and ultimately embraces recovery. What causes eating disorders? The first (very important!) thing to say about eating disorders is that families don’t cause eating disorders. They are complex disorders that arise based on a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. Biological: People who have certain genetic markers are more likely to develop eating disorders and…
“Everybody lies.” This was the credo of the titular character in one of my all-time favorite shows: House, MD. And of course, it is true. From the saints to the malignant narcissist politicians and everyone in between, no one is completely honest all the time. When it comes to eating disorder treatment, there is an unsettling phenomenon that is not discussed as much as it should be: the majority of eating disorder patients are dishonest about their symptoms. The dishonesty can range from occasionally telling their parents that they ate lunch while out with friends when they did not,…
