By Lisa Brooks, Executive Director Looking Glass Foundation’s impact on the community is very personal to me. Like many young people, one of my daughters developed an eating disorder early in the lockdown of COVID-19 when she lost her routines, connections through school and sports, and the freedom to see her friends. Thankfully, we recognized what was happening early on, and were able to access the supports she needed. I am happy to say that she is now well on her way to recovery, but it has certainly been a long and difficult path. Accessing care was not an easy feat. I…
As energy prices rise and the cost of living goes up, it is estimated that there are 4 million children from poorer households who have limited or uncertain access to healthy food.My current PhD research is examining how this childhood food insecurity affects eating behaviour. Research suggests that food deprivation in childhood leads to obesity.A 2017 study found that children between the age of eight and ten from homes that do not have easy access to healthy food are five times more likely to be obese compared to those from households that have enough food. The study, which looked at 50…
Eating disorders like anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge-eating disorder (BED) typically begin in adolescence, but they are increasingly seen in younger children. Researchers have linked the rise of eating disorders in children and teens to the pandemic and the ongoing youth mental health crisis, among other stressors.1 2 Social media may also play a role in driving body image dissatisfaction and negative comparison among teens.3 What’s more, children and teens with conditions like anxiety, depression, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at greater risk for developing eating disorders.4 , 5 Eating disorders are complex but treatable…
TikTok star Remi Bader is sharing her personal experience with the much-buzzed-about drug, Ozempic. In case you missed the barrage of videos about the drug that have been spreading on TikTok lately, here’s what you need to know. Ozempic is a prescription drug containing the active ingredient semaglutide. It has been approved by the…

Comfort food might not be as healing as it seems. If you’re feeling down, stressed or heartbroken, it’s all too tempting to go for food that makes you feel happier — but it could also be bad for your health in the long run. A new study published in the European Journal of Preventative Cardiology found that emotional eating — eating in response to sadness or stress rather than hunger — was associated with heart health issues. Over the course of 13 years, researchers from the University Hospital of Nancy in France studied 1,109 participants who were tested on whether…
At least one school district in Seattle thinks so. Seattle Public Schools (SPS) has filed a suit in US District Court alleging that “defendants [social media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat] affirmatively recommend and promote harmful content to youth, such as pro-anorexia and eating disorder content.” Essentially it appears SPS is saying such content exacerbates eating disorder symptoms and undermines effective treatment. Not surprisingly perhaps, the issue is complicated. First some medical facts: eating disorders are biological brain disorders that are highly heritable (estimates – based on twin studies and genome-wide analyses – are as high…

My “word” for 2023 is CREATE. I want to spend more time writing, painting, and home decorating. I already placed my new paint-by-numbers picture on my easel, so I have easy access to colorful paints and brushes. I want to create more knowledge, so I signed up for the Masterclass App and professional trainings throughout the year. Perhaps I will learn how to grow a garden or make something in my very un-used slow cooker. I also want to create more time to focus on my passions and purpose in life. I want to spend more time donating my time…
