It’s a myth that the effects of eating disorders aren’t as dangerous as the effects of other mental health conditions. Unfortunately, health complications related to eating disorders can be fatal. However, early intervention markedly improves treatment outcomes, which is one reason to ensure people with eating disorders receive a prompt diagnosis and access to treatment. Mortality Rates in People With Eating Disorders Studies report varying death rates from eating disorders, but there are common findings. It’s estimated that every 52 minutes, someone dies from a complication of an eating disorder—that’s 10,200 deaths per year in the United States. Anorexia nervosa may…

When you hear the term “eating disorder,” what images come to your mind? I am going to guess a female-identifying person; perhaps in her teens or 20s; probably Caucasian; an urbanite; middle- or upper-middle class; anxious; perfectionistic; severely restricting food intake to the point of starvation; exercising intensely; and possibly using purging techniques (e.g., self-induced vomiting) to achieve an unhealthy weight. You’re not entirely wrong. Many of us were taught this stereotypical image from our social media, TV shows, magazines (does anyone still read actual printed magazines?), and perhaps inadvertently even within our own health professional education programs. And it…

ABSTRACTFrom 2017 through 2021, a total of 2,454 active component U.S. military service members received incident diagnoses for 1 of the following eating disorders: anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED), or “other/unspecified eating disorder” (OUED). The incidence rate of any eating disorder among women was more than 8 times the rate among men. Overall rates were highest among service members under 30 years of age. Crude annual…

Antisocial personality disorder may be one of the most misunderstood mental disorders. It is also often undiagnosed and untreated, according to a recent special report by Donald Black, M.D. in Psychiatric News.1 He referred to it as “psychiatry’s forgotten disorder,” noting that few clinicians diagnose or treat it. Antisocial personality disorder is one of 10 types of personality disorders identified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR). People with antisocial personality disorder may repeatedly disregard or violate the rights of others, may lie, deceive or manipulate others, act impulsively, or disregard their or others’ safety. They may…

What a year to be a mental health blogger! It’s safe to say we’re all a bit tired and weary. Challenges aside, 2022 was also the year I added a few extra titles to my blogger title: I’m now a business owner, workshop facilitator and speaker! With 2022 coming to an end, I wanted to share a recap of the year, including some of my favourite projects, blog posts and events. I also want to show the not-so-glamorous side. This time of year is when we see so many highlight reels. Trips abroad, new babies, wild nights out, gruelling hiking adventures…

Didn’t the holidays show up quickly this year? It was Halloween, then Thanksgiving, and now the December holiday season has arrived. Recovery from an eating disorder is hard work and for some it is even more challenging during the holiday season due to increased stress, busier schedules, more responsibilities, and extra holiday parties and events with friends and family.   As you may know I am fully recovered from Anorexia and Bulimia after suffering for more than twenty-five years. I am a licensed clinical social worker and a Carolyn Costin Eating Disorder certified coach. Holidays were often more difficult for…

Be it a traumatic childhood nightmare you can’t forget, a recurring dream about your teeth falling out, or a joyful, magical adventure you could only, well, dream about making a reality, the movies that play in our brains while we sleep are basically our body’s way of “trying to teach us something or inspire us. In the dream state, you’re able to make connections that when you’re awake, logic and reason might stop you and say, ‘that’s impossible,'” explains Theresa Cheung, a United Kingdom-based dream expert and author of the brand-new book How to Catch a Dream (and dozens of…

We also help the communities we serve by enrolling members in food assistance programs. We are creating community partnerships, funding new research, and developing ways to increase access to nutritious food through our Food Is Medicine Center of Excellence. Our approach to this work serves as a strong model to inform national policy recommendations. For example, we’ve worked to increase enrollment in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. We set up a national text-based outreach campaign to Kaiser Permanente members who may be eligible for this program. These efforts have helped over 123,000 people apply for the program. We’ve tested an effort…
