Today we’ll hear from a parent who wants to convince her daughter that she knows the best eating disorder treatment, but her daughter refuses to listen. I’ll talk through what this parent can do to increase her influence and support her child’s eating disorder recovery. The letterDear Ginny, Our daughter is 23 and has been in and out of eating disorder treatment since she was 18. I’m so exhausted by the whole process, and it’s been frustrating to have to do all this with her as a legal adult since we are cut out of so much and haven’t been able to…
Share on PinterestDo boys and girls face a different risk for disordered eating? Not so, a large new study suggests. Image credit: Tom Merton/Getty Images.Eating disorders not only cause individual distress, but also increase the burden on healthcare, costing the United States economy approximately $65 billion a year.Early intervention is essential to reduce the potential harm to young people, but researchers have limited information on how disordered eating begins and how it changes before a child reaches puberty.A new study of almost 12,000 9- and 10-year-olds provides some indication about disordered eating behaviors in this age group.Researchers looked at how…
I have written a book! Running Free: My Battle with Anorexia is being published on 9th August 2022.Here is a short extract:“Organ failure. Resuscitation Unit. Death. The answer? Anorexia.”Running Free: My Battle with Anorexia is my harrowing yet inspirational true story of how I went from Olympic hopeful to hours away from death, detailing my suffering and recovering from anorexia. To say that the term “emotional eating” has a bad rap is an understatement. Diet culture has long gone out of its way to convince us that food is the absolute last thing we should turn to in times of stress or sadness. How many times have you read that if you feel like eating a cookie after a bad day, taking a warm bath and doing some deep breathing is a “healthier” choice? Or that if you’re stressed and feeling snack-y, you should drink a few glasses of water instead? I know I’ve seen and heard that stuff more…
Crystal Kung Minkoff was mortified when her “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” castmates peppered her with questions about her eating disorder struggles in the episodes that aired last month. “I felt embarrassed. Like suddenly the show didn’t exist, and I just felt embarrassed,” Minkoff, who revealed her battle with bulimia and body dysmorphia on the show, told the Daily Beast in an interview published Thursday. Minkoff continued, “There’s a feeling of embarrassment being on the show, the idea of being filmed. And then, you know, I got made fun of, as a child, for being chubby. That’s how it felt.”…
Eating disorders already affect 28 million Americans—those aged 12 through 25 make up 95% of cases. A new study, published this week in JAMA Pediatrics, shows how those even younger than 10 are affected by eating disorders. The research studied roughly 12,000 nine and ten-year-olds between 2016 and 2018 and found that 5% took part in binge eating behaviors and 2.5% took measures to avoid gaining weight, including self-induced vomiting, which experts say many parents don’t know children are capable of doing. “That potentially means millions of kids in this country could be struggling with dangerous eating practices that could…
Binge-eating disorder was first described in 1959 by the American psychiatrist Albert Stunkard to illustrate the characteristics of a subgroup of patients with obesity and recurrent episodes of excessive and uncontrolled eating; a behavior he called binge eating. However, its existence as a distinct eating disorder was ignored until the second half of the 1980s, when some studies on the prevalence of bulimia nervosa in the population discovered a large subgroup of individuals who did not use compensatory behaviors after binge episodes. In the same period, it was observed that about a quarter of individuals who required obesity treatment reported…

By Amanda G. One of the most valuable lessons I learned while recovering from my eating disorder was how harmful negative self-talk can really be, and how to shift that into a more positive light. It hit me hardest during treatment that the relationship with myself is the longest, most intimate one I’ll ever have. I am my longest best friend, and I deserve to talk to myself that way. Do you struggle a lot with negative self talk like I did? I remember being so cruel, crueller than any critics, even crueller than my harshest bullies. It’s akin to…
