If you know nothing else about Sylvia Plath, you probably know how she died. While she remains one of the best known and most beloved American poets, hers is a literary legacy often overshadowed by her death, the mental health struggles that led to it and her troubled marriage to fellow poet Ted Hughes. As readers, or even just members of a general public in which it is hard to avoid being aware of Plath to some degree, we tend to assume she lived as she died: a cold, consistently depressed shell of a woman, a ghost even when she…

The research was led by K. Jean Forney, an assistant professor of psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio University who specializes in eating disorders. Both purging disorder and bulimia nervosa are eating disorders characterized by self-induced vomiting and other…

Reading Time: 5 minutes Being able to tell the difference between an eating disorder and disordered eating can sometimes be difficult. After all, there are no standardized definitions of disordered eating used in the scientific literature, and many are often confused about what does (and doesn’t) constitute a disordered pattern of behaviour. Eating disorders and disordered eating are indeed highly correlated, but they’re far from the same thing and they shouldn’t be used interchangeably.  Eating disorders, like bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and anorexia nervosa, are mental illnesses that are based on a very specific set of diagnostic criteria met by…
