A new report has found that eating disorders are costing the UK £9.4 billion a year, with many people experiencing loss of income and having to pay high prices for treatment. The Hearts Minds and Genes Coalition has published the report, which highlights the experiences of people living with eating disorders including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder, and how they have been affected by the pandemic. One man aged 24, describes having anorexia for 13 years, which left him hospitalised and unable to work for three years after leaving university, during which time he had no income. “My eating disorder caused…

Social media users who view images of healthy foods that have been heavily endorsed with ‘likes’ are more likely to make healthier food choices, a new study has found. The research, by psychologists from Aston University’s College of Health and Life Sciences, found that study participants who viewed highly liked mock Instagram posts of fruit and vegetables ate a significantly higher proportion of grapes than cookies, with consumption of grapes increasing by 14 percent more calories, compared to those who viewed highly liked high calorie foods. One in five patients with potentially life-threatening eating disorders are forced to pay for private care as part of their treatment, with families leaving their jobs and living off credit cards to support loved ones, a report reveals.The huge financial impact of conditions such as anorexia and bulimia is laid bare in a study showing in England alone the cost of eating disorders was £8bn in 2020, rising to £9.4bn across the UK.
