The scent of baked goods wafts towards you as the supermarket doors glide open. Your stomach rumbles and your mouth waters at the sight and smell of so much food. Approximately 40,000 products are available in an average North American supermarket. Despite your best intentions, you succumb to the deals and offers that you don’t really need. Hey, why not get two bags of chips for the price of one? Before you know it, your shopping cart is full and that chocolate bar you grabbed at the checkout is in your mouth. One bar won’t hurt, right? If this sounds…

Hello there! It’s been a while! And I am happy to say that this is 100% a good thing. My life has been busy this summer, but I am so happy. With the exception of doctor appointments (and even those are beginning to dwindle a bit), my life has consisted of “normal” 20 year old busyness, and I am so, so thankful for that. It dawned on me this morning (while I was coaching at swim practice, and had a fresh blackberry that one of the lifeguards offered me) just how far I’ve come in the last few months. I…

Yoga: good for the body and good for the mindJason Andrew for The Washington Post via Getty Images Yoga seems to reduce symptoms of depression, including focusing on negative feelings and emotional eating, suggesting the practice may be a useful complement to talking therapies and antidepressant drugs. As yoga has become a popular way for people to exercise and relieve stress, researchers have tried to understand the ways in which it might benefit our health. So far there seems to be a link between meditation, which is at the core of many yoga styles, and boosted insulin production and slower…

To The Bone is the hot topic right now in the eating disorder community: amongst those who are suffering, those in remission, and professionals who work with people with eating disorders. There are reviews being written about it left, right, and centre, and unfortunately I am here to throw my unoriginal opinion into the mix. I know that what I am about to write has been said already, but I wanted to join the conversation. Here are my thoughts on To The Bone below. (GIANT SPOILERS ALERT FOR THE CONTENT BELOW) What was wrong with it: It shows an overly…

I thought I would write a post and just update everyone on how I have been going lately. I haven’t written a personal post for a long time and although I feel guilty for not posting more often, regular blogging just doesn’t feel like the right thing for me anymore. I miss some aspects of blogging and am incredibly grateful for my blog, as I honestly don’t think I would have ever recovered without it but in order to move keep moving forward, I felt as though writing about anorexia all the time was keeping me in the past and preventing…

When President Trump remarked to French First Lady Brigitte Macron last week, “You’re in such great shape,” I immediately had a series of questions. For instance, when and where did she compete the presidential (no pun intended) fitness test that he must have observed? Was he most impressed with her strength or endurance, her flexibility or speed? Were there any other assessments he used to gauge her fitness level?Because clearly, he woudn’t have commented, “She’s in such good physical shape” just by looking at her, would he? Surely, our president knows that being “in shape” is not attached to a…

To understand what binge eating disorder is, you first have to understand what it is not. It is not overeating and taking in more calories than your body needs, even if you do that every day. It is not “grazing” — eating small amounts of food more or less continuously throughout the day. It is not overindulging on Thanksgiving, plowing through a giant fast food meal, or even demolishing a pint of ice cream in one sitting. It’s also important to note that most people who are overweight or obese do not have BED. Genetics, a diet high in processed foods…

Emotional eating is often seen as a shameful act we have to hide (sometimes literally) and punish ourselves for later in the gym. But emotional eating is a thing humans do—because we eat and we have emotions and sometimes a cookie does just make you feel better. Hey, not even the nutrition pros are immune to a little chocolate therapy sometimes. “Even though I’m a dietitian, I’ve definitely eaten emotionally,” says Rebecca Scritchfield, R.D. and author of Body Kindness. Her emotional eating stems from a childhood where she was only allowed to be “happy” and all negative emotions had to be stuffed down…

I’m pleased to share an essay by novelist JoAnna Novak.  She is the author of I Must Have You (Skyhorse Publishing, 2017) and also Noirmania (forthcoming from Inside the Castle 2018).  I’m thrilled that she has contributed to Make Peace With Food.  Here’s a peek into our conversation about her work. Dr. Nina:  JoAnna, can you share what inspired you to write this essay? JoAnna: I attended an orientation recently–it was a morning thing–and the host brought bagels. That reminded me how much pressure even the presence of food can create for someone with an eating disorder. The more I thought about this, the…
