— Every day for the past six months, a 29-year-old actress in New York has been logging every meal via an app to monitor what she eats and more importantly how she feels afterward.”It shows the correlation between the emotion and food,” said the actress, who asked to be identified by a pseudonym, Anita. “That’s really great.”Anita uses a mobile app called Recovery Record, part of a growing trend of mobile technology designed to help people with eating disorders. Now the National Eating Disorders Association is hoping to capitalize on that trend by partnering with Recovery Record on a new…
Johner Images/Getty Images Why do some people develop eating disorders? It’s thought that 30 million people of all ages and genders in the U.S. have an eating disorder. Considering eating disorders are so common, you might be curious to know what causes an unhealthy relationship with food. The long and the short answer is both your genetics and societal influences. “We say that genetics load the gun and environment pulls the trigger,” explains Bonnie Brennan, senior clinical director of adult residential and partial hospital services at Eating Recovery Center in Denver, Colorado. “Genetic predisposition, though not necessary, can play a big…
In order to recover from a restrictive eating disorder, you WILL NEED to gain weight (especially if you are currently underweight). As much as we would like this to be untrue, if you are not willing to gain weight, you will not recover as this just shows how unhealthy your mindset is. It is only when you challenge and overcome this type of unhealthy mindset, that you will be able to continue making recovery progress and actually make a full recovery. As well as needing to reach and possibly exceed a healthy weight in order to recover mentally, you need to…
I’m pleased to welcome back Thomas Grainger as a guest blogger. In honor of Eating Disorder Awareness Week, he shares his thoughts about balance. Take it away, Thomas! BALANCED BODY THROUGH BALANCED EATING by Thomas Grainger 2016 was the year that we witnessed a spike in talks around ‘clean eating’. From paleo to veganism, different people were associating themselves with different labels and different eating ideologies. With a focus on reclaiming back one’s health and doing what we felt was the best for our bodies, many people lost sight of what truly mattered. Balance. Eating healthily is very much…
After not being home to see my family since christmas, I really enjoyed travelling home to Swansea for the weekend with my boyfriend. Things have not been great for my family over the last few months and even though the issues are still ongoing, it was still nice to go home and see everyone. Now that I have my own life in Launceston, it would be so easy to just completely distance myself from my family and all their problems back in Swansea but that wouldnt be fair on my little sister and dad. I love them so much and…
Anorexia can cause severe health issues, and the illness can sometimes be fatal. New research suggests a surgical technique can stimulate the patient’s brain into improving their mental health and overall well-being.Share on PinterestA new study suggests that deep brain stimulation may prove effective in treating anorexia.Anorexia is an eating disorder that makes people lose more weight than what is considered healthy. During a group coaching and connection call I had with my secret Facebook group I was reminded how everything we feel is a result of the story we tell ourselves. You see, the quality of your life, your present experience, the emotions you feel are a result of the story you’re making up in your mind. Every situation. Every moment. They’re all stories. Every thought you have about the past or future is a story. The data of life is filtered by our brain and stored in our mind as a story about the way things are, the way other people are…and…
Let’s face it – most people aren’t feeling so great after a binge. Whether it’s physical discomfort or the mental and emotional experience of guilt, frustration, or self-attack, the moments (or hours) following a binge can be rather unpleasant. But there are some things you can do to reduce your distress, as well as the incidence of future binge episodes.1) Engage in self-care. What do you need to do to make yourself more comfortable? Would it help to lie down? Change your clothes? Might anything help settle your stomach? Is there something you can do that is emotionally soothing -…
Whether your food cravings lean toward sweet or salty, it’s likely that you’ve found yourself — at least once — indulging in a treat even when you know you’re not actually hungry. It happens to the best of us: mindless eating in front of the TV, a few extra pieces of candy to help manage stress at the office, a cozy night in with a pint of ice cream to recover from a bad breakup. You may be killin’ it at the gym and cooking super healthy meals, but emotional eating can still pose a challenge to even the best-intentioned.“Emotional…
I thought it would be a good idea to share with you all what I eat on a typical day now that I am recovered. I don’t eat exactly the same amount of calories every day but I know about what I eat and I never eat any less then 2200 calories. I eat relatively healithily, not because I am scared of typically unhealthy foods, but because I enjoy healthy foods as well as nourishing my body. I find I feel much more energetic and happy when I eat nutrient rich foods so thats why I chose to eat them…
