Diet fads come and go. Low-fat foods were all the rage in the 1990s, but have since fallen out of favour; the low-carb Atkins diet gained widespread popularity in the early 2000s but is now passé; and even the Palaeolithic Diet (Paleo) is past peak popularity. The latest health trend to come onto the scene is avoiding ultra-processed food (UPF). I’ve tried following the Sebi diet plan, on and off, for a number of years. However, it doesn’t seem to be a realistic option for me to follow it perfectly, as I’m technically allergic to multiple foods that Sebi approves (including bell peppers, coconut oil, tomatoes, oranges and papayas). I also can’t see myself eliminating chicken and fish from my diet completely. With that said, I do incorporate some Sebi-inspired dishes on a rotating menu. My household frequently begins the day with fruit-rich breakfast dishes, snacks on vegetables with hummus dip and eats dinner meals with quinoa and kale. These…

— OPINION — In case you missed it, among the Supreme Court’s panoply of precedent shredding opinions last week was one that overruled the court’s watershed 1984 decision in Chevron U.S.A. v. Natural Resources Defense Council. Under Chevron, federal courts deferred to an agency’s interpretation of a law, as long as the interpretation was reasonable. Last Friday’s ruling gives federal judges more leeway to question federal agency decision making. The ruling has important implications for food safety.  To understand why, consider that federal food safety agencies, like federal agencies more generally, are not the most dynamic organizations. Risk aversion tends…

But seriously, all jokes aside, yesterday I made THE MOST DELICIOUS dinner, and it was a meal that literally made itself! Yesterday, I had a 9am OBGYN appointment to prepare for this 38 week old baby, and I cooked 10 days worth of freezer meals, and so let’s just say: I was in no mood to cook DINNER after all that slicin’ and dicin’ in the kitchen all day. Enter: the crockpot! (First of all, what freezer meals did I cook? I cooked my Turkey Vegetable Soup, as well as my Italian…

Between work schedules, social obligations, and all-too-common diets, a number of outside factors influence or even dictate when—and what—we eat. But our bodies’ specific wants and needs rarely align with society’s schedules and expectations. Over years of following these outside rules, it’s easy to lose track of our internal hunger and satiety cues or “train” ourselves otherwise. Eating for purposes other than hunger or nutrition can be a slippery slope toward disordered eating behaviors. Intuitive eating offers a way to return to our inner and individual nutritional needs. Learning how to practice intuitive eating can be beneficial, whether you’re in…

Cases of eating disorders are on the rise nationally, bringing about an influx of providers in recent years. Within the last year, the industry began to see eating disorder providers shutter or scale back their programming. The fall of some eating disorder providers may come down to an over-prioritization of margins rather than the mission, Allan Benham, CEO of eating disorder treatment provider Alsana, said in the latest episode of Behavioral Health Business Perspectives podcast. Westlake Village, California-based Alsana offers residential, partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs in Alabama, California and Missouri. Food harvested from British Columbia’s Elk Valley is higher in selenium than food from the grocery store or food harvested from regions not affected by Teck Resources’ coal mines, according to a human health risk assessment the mining company was required to undertake.  The assessment found eating an average of one meal a day of fish harvested from waters polluted by the company’s coal mines — an amount the Ktunaxa Nation considers to be sukiⱡ ʔiknaⱡa or eating good — could pose potential health risks due to selenium contamination. Eating the same fish from the rivers and creeks downstream of…
