CNN  —  Eating higher levels of ultraprocessed food may shorten lifespans by more than 10%, according to a new, unpublished study of over 500,000 people whom researchers followed for nearly three decades. Compulsive eating and obesity may be triggered by a specific gut bacteria, suggests a new study—and the breakthrough may lead to new treatments to address the problem of food addiction. The bacteria identified by an international research team is associated with both humans and mice developing an addiction to food that can lead to obesity. They also identified bacteria that play a beneficial role in preventing food addiction. “A number of factors contribute to food addiction, which is characterized by loss of control over food intake and is associated with obesity, other eating disorders, and alterations in the composition of…

We know that when family caregivers of those with eating disorders have support and tools, they’re better equipped to effectively provide a more conducive recovery environment. Sadly, we have broken health care systems in every country and especially in the USA that don’t allow for this support to be provided regularly and effectively. Don’t get me started…One of the most helpful tools that allows parents to respond vs react is learning to listen with validation and acknowledgement. This takes a LOT of training and practice. More on that later, but if you’re like me and want to JUMP TO LEARNING…

By Alvin Powell | Harvard Staff Writer | Harvard Gazette Binge eating is one of the world’s most common eating disorders but is poorly understood. Kristin Javaras, assistant professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry and instructor in epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, recently shed light on the subject in a study, published in the journal Psychological Medicine. The findings showed that earlier research, which focused on younger women, underestimated how chronic the problem can be for many in the broader population, lasting for years or even decades. Javaras, who is also associated psychologist at McLean Hospital’s Division of Women’s…

Nothing ruins a day outside faster than a swarm of mosquitoes. These bloodthirsty insects not only cause uncomfortable, itchy bites, they can also carry a host of diseases.  If you’re a natural mosquito magnet, it makes sense to do what you can to lower the risk of being bitten. Here’s what research and an entomologist…
