Because of the rise in inflation and its impact on the food market, eating healthily has become somewhat of a burden for the average Nigerian.

An average citizen in the country is now compelled to pick and choose what to eat every day due to the rising cost of meals that make up a good, balanced diet.

The least expensive combination of locally accessible foods that satisfy internationally accepted food-based dietary recommendations is known as the Cost of a Healthy Diet (CoHD). It serves as a gauge for both the financial and physical accessibility of wholesome diets.

The national average cost of a healthy meal was N982 in March 2024, according to the National Bureau of Statistics research titled “Cost of a Healthy Diet.” Compared to the quantity (N938) recorded in February 2024, this is 4.7% greater.

In March 2024, the average CoHD per adult in the South West was N1,198, whereas the average CoHD per adult in the North West was N787.

With that said these are the ten states in Nigeria where maintaining a balanced diet comes at the highest cost.
